ChatGPT Canvas vs Claude artifacts

ChatGPT retired Canvas in chat for writing and code blocks and moved bigger jobs to dedicated features, while Claude rebuilt artifacts into editable docs, decks, designs, and apps.

The short answer

OpenAI removed ChatGPT Canvas from GPT-5.5 Instant and GPT-5.5 Thinking on May 28, 2026, replacing it in the chat with writing and code blocks while bigger jobs live in ChatGPT Work, Sites, Space pages, and Slides. Anthropic rebuilt Claude artifacts on September 16, 2026 with templates for Docs, Slides, Design, Dashboards, and Motion, alongside real-time co-editing in Claude Docs. Your choice now comes down to which file exports you need, who edits with you, and whether recipients have an account on the same AI tool.

ChatGPT Canvas vs Claude artifacts is a different comparison today than the one in most search results, which describe 2024 product versions. Back then, you used ChatGPT Canvas to edit text side by side and Claude artifacts to preview code. In 2026, that matchup no longer holds because OpenAI retired Canvas on current models and Claude turned artifacts into direct editors with file export.

What happened to ChatGPT Canvas?

On May 28, 2026, OpenAI removed canvas from GPT-5.5 Instant and GPT-5.5 Thinking so writing and coding now happen directly in chat responses through writing blocks and code blocks. OpenAI's canvas help article no longer exists, and paid users can keep using canvas only for a limited time through legacy models until those models are retired. Canvas launched in 2024 (reaching Free users in December 2024 with Python execution, and adding shared React or HTML in February 2025), and the bigger jobs it once handled now have their own features: Work, Sites, Space pages, and Slides. If a guide tells you to click the Canvas icon in a standard chat, it is out of date.

Writing blocks and code blocks: Writing blocks are editable drafts in the chat (emails, posts, documents) that you can type into, format, open full screen and save to your Library. Code blocks preview HTML, React, SVG, Mermaid diagrams and charts inside ChatGPT and run supported Python code. OpenAI says the available actions vary by plan, device, settings, model and rollout.

ChatGPT Work: Work is ChatGPT's agent for longer tasks that end in a finished document, spreadsheet, presentation, report or Site, including native Google Docs, Sheets and Slides when the Google Workspace app is enabled. On the web and mobile it is on paid plans except Free and Go; in the new desktop app it is on every plan, including Free (subject to rollout).

ChatGPT Sites: Launched in public beta on July 9, 2026 for Plus, Pro, and supported Business and Enterprise workspaces (not Free or Go), Sites is built in Work (say "website" or mention @Sites) to create, preview, publish, and share interactive websites and lightweight apps like dashboards and project trackers. You edit a Site by describing changes to ChatGPT and deploy versions to update the live address, with hosting included on Plus and Pro and building or editing counting toward Codex usage.

ChatGPT Space pages: Space is a home on Pro, Business, and Enterprise (not Plus, Free, or Go) for work and pages, which are editable documents that can include charts, trackers, and interactive tools. You can edit directly on web or desktop (not mobile), ask ChatGPT, comment on selected text, and share with view or edit access for real-time team editing (Enterprise admins may need to enable sharing).

ChatGPT Slides: Rolling out from October 16, 2026 to eligible Pro, Business, and Enterprise users with Space access, Slides lets teammates create and edit the same presentation in Space in real time with comments, and export on the web to PowerPoint, PDF, or Google Slides.

What are Claude artifacts now?

Claude rebuilt artifacts on September 16, 2026. An artifact opens in its own window beside the chat and can be a document, code snippet, single-page website, image, diagram, dashboard or small interactive tool, and Claude Docs adds real-time team writing. Artifacts made in a chat before September 16, 2026 are legacy artifacts that keep working and can still be shared, though new legacy artifacts cannot be made.

Artifacts are available on Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise: the Docs, Slides, and Design templates are on all plans, Dashboards (beta) is on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise, and Motion (beta) is on Team and Enterprise. To use them, turn on Code execution and file creation in Settings, then Capabilities. In a template artifact, you edit directly (type in a doc, edit a slide, or move elements on a design), or highlight text in a doc, click Edit with Claude, and type the change.

Docs export to Word, PDF, Markdown, and Google Docs; decks to PowerPoint, PDF, or Google Slides; designs as a .zip, PDF, PowerPoint, or standalone HTML; and animations as MP4 video. AI-powered artifacts let users sign in with their own Claude account so usage counts against their plan, while app connections and up to 20 MB of text storage per artifact are on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. Link sharing (Can view, Commenter, or Can edit) requires Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise and must be managed on web or Claude Desktop, not mobile; artifacts that connect to your apps or use Claude cannot use "Anyone with the link". Check whether your recipient has a Claude login before sending an artifact link, because "Anyone with the link" still asks them to sign in.

Claude Docs is on Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise, letting editors work on the same doc at the same time as you and Claude and mention @Claude in comments. Docs have version history and export to Word, PDF, Markdown, and Google Docs, though deleting is permanent, charts do not update on their own, and sharing is view or edit only (no comment-only level yet).

What about Gemini Canvas and Copilot Pages?

Gemini Canvas is available to all signed-in Gemini users to create or edit a doc, app, slides, or code, and turn a creation into an Audio Overview, quiz, infographic, or web page. You can edit text directly or ask Gemini, edit code in Code view, and step through saved versions with Previous Version and Next Version as changes save automatically (text styling is editable only in the web app on a computer). It offers Export to Docs, Export to Slides (or slides as PDF), and Export to Colab, while Share & export, then Share creates a public link where recipients can make a copy or view and edit app data.

Microsoft Copilot Pages is a persistent canvas in Copilot chat for group work, available to work or school accounts with SharePoint or OneDrive storage (even without a Copilot license) and to Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium, and Pro subscribers. You can edit a page yourself at any time, create interactive charts, visuals, and dashboards, and use real-time co-authoring and comments. Shared pages open in Microsoft Loop for work or school accounts, and you can save a page as a PDF (Create, then PDF) or Word document (Create, then Document), though converting to PowerPoint is currently unavailable.

How do they compare?

Each tool differs in what you can edit directly, which files you can export, who can open a shared link, and which plan you need.

Which should you use for each job?

No single tool wins every job, because the right pick depends on your export format, plan, and how your team works. Match the job to the tool that supports your final file format and your recipients' accounts.

Can people without an account open what you make?

Most shared links require the viewer to sign in to the same platform, with only a few public link options. Before sending a link to clients or outside partners, check whether they will hit a login screen. Test your share link in a private browser window before sending it outside your company.

In ChatGPT, anyone can open a public Site without signing in when public publishing is enabled (it is off by default in Enterprise), while outside viewers invited to a non-public Site must sign in with the invited ChatGPT account and OpenAI does not say whether opening a shared Space page requires an account.

In Claude, everyone needs a Claude account to open a shared artifact or Claude Doc even with "Anyone with the link" (except legacy artifacts published from a chat before September 16, 2026), and on Team and Enterprise, artifacts stay inside the organization unless an Owner allows external sharing, while docs cannot be shared outside the organization yet.

In Gemini Canvas, public links open only on gemini.google.com, not in the Gemini mobile app, and on Google Workspace accounts public links are off by default while Google Drive sharing requires a signed-in Google account.

In Microsoft Copilot Pages, shared pages open in Microsoft Loop for signed-in work or school accounts, and outside guests cannot open a shared page by link.

When the people who need to see or review your work do not all use the same AI tool, you can publish it to SecondPage as a page with its own link by asking a connected AI or by uploading files or a folder yourself. (Disclosure: SecondPage is our product, and you are reading a SecondPage page.) A page set to Anyone with the link opens with no SecondPage, ChatGPT, Claude, or other AI account, or you can keep it set to Restricted or Your organization so only people you add can open it, and reviewers can leave comments or anchored edits right on the page. If everyone already works in the same ChatGPT workspace or Claude organization, the built-in sharing is simpler; see our guide to every way to share from ChatGPT and Claude.

Questions people ask

Does ChatGPT still have Canvas?

OpenAI removed canvas from GPT-5.5 Instant and GPT-5.5 Thinking on May 28, 2026, and OpenAI's canvas help article no longer exists. Writing and coding now happen directly in chat responses through writing blocks and code blocks, while bigger jobs have their own features in Work, Sites, Space pages, and Slides. Paid users can keep using canvas for a limited time through legacy models until those models are retired.

Can ChatGPT build artifacts like Claude?

Yes, ChatGPT covers the same jobs across its chat blocks and paid features. In a normal chat, code blocks preview HTML pages, React components, SVG images, Mermaid diagrams, and Vega or Vega-Lite charts, and run supported Python code. On paid plans, ChatGPT Work and Sites build and publish interactive websites and dashboards, while Pro, Business, and Enterprise users can also create Space pages and Slides.

What is the difference between Claude artifacts and ChatGPT Sites?

Claude artifacts let you directly edit documents, slides, designs, dashboards, and small interactive tools, and export them to Word, PowerPoint, PDF, Google Docs, Google Slides, standalone HTML, or a .zip file. ChatGPT Sites (built in Work on Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise) creates and hosts live websites and dashboards that you edit by describing changes to ChatGPT, with no documented code export. Anyone can open a public ChatGPT Site without signing in, whereas opening a shared Claude artifact made after September 16, 2026 requires a Claude account.

Is Gemini Canvas free?

Yes, Gemini Canvas is available to all signed-in Gemini users. It creates or edits a doc, app, slides, or code, turns creations into an Audio Overview, quiz, infographic, or web page, and exports to Google Docs, Google Slides, PDF (for slides), or Colab. Text styling can be edited only in the Gemini web app on a computer, and shared links open only on gemini.google.com, not in the mobile app.

Which is better for writing documents, ChatGPT or Claude?

Claude covers more document needs across all plans because both Claude Docs and the Docs artifact template are on Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise, export to Word, PDF, Markdown, and Google Docs, and support real-time co-editing in Claude Docs. ChatGPT offers writing blocks in chat and can create native Google Docs in Work, while real-time editing in Space pages requires Pro, Business, or Enterprise and has no documented export.
