How to make a dashboard with ChatGPT or Claude
You can upload an Excel file or connect a Google Sheet and ask the AI to build an interactive dashboard. The harder parts are checking the math, keeping the data fresh, and making sure your team can open the link.
The short answer
Upload an XLSX or CSV file (or connect Google Drive) to ChatGPT or Claude and ask for an interactive dashboard with your key numbers, charts and a date filter. On ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business or Enterprise, ChatGPT Work with Sites can host the dashboard at its own web address and update it on a schedule; Claude builds it as an artifact, which you can share by link on Pro or higher with people who have a Claude account.
If you search for how to make a dashboard with ChatGPT or Claude, most older guides tell you to use the AI as an adviser that writes formulas to paste into Excel. Today, ChatGPT and Claude can build the interactive dashboard themselves, and ChatGPT can host it at its own web address. The parts people trip on come after: whether the numbers are right, whether it stays current, and who can actually open it, because each tool has different rules.
How should you prepare your spreadsheet?
Format your spreadsheet as a clean table before uploading it to ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. Following OpenAI's layout advice for data analysis, put descriptive column headers in the first row, keep one row per record, and avoid multiple unrelated tables in one sheet. Remove any columns you do not want in the dashboard, because AI output can repeat names, numbers, or details you did not mean to share. A quick Save As with only the columns you need saves a lot of cleanup later.
- ChatGPT: Accepts XLSX, XLS, CSV, and TSV files up to about 50 MB each, depending on row size; you can upload up to 80 files every 3 hours, and Free users can upload 3 files a day.
- Claude: Accepts CSV and XLSX files (turn on Code execution and file creation in Settings, then Capabilities, to upload XLSX).
- Gemini: The Gemini app accepts up to 10 files per prompt, up to 100 MB each.
How do you make a dashboard in ChatGPT?
You can make a dashboard in ChatGPT in two ways: create quick charts inside a regular chat on any plan, or build a hosted dashboard with its own link using ChatGPT Work and Sites. In a regular chat on Free or paid plans, attach a spreadsheet from your computer or from connected sources like Google Drive, OneDrive, or SharePoint (when available for your account or workspace). ChatGPT runs Python on the file and can show interactive tables and interactive bar, line, pie or scatter charts; other chart types may come back as static images.
To build a private, interactive dashboard with its own link, OpenAI's guide, "Build a dashboard that stays up to date", combines ChatGPT Work (agent mode for longer, multi-step work and finished files) with ChatGPT Sites, which is in public beta and included with Plus, Pro, and supported Business and Enterprise workspaces (on by default in Business, enabled by an admin in Enterprise, and not on Free or Go).
- Open ChatGPT Work. Go to chatgpt.com, sign in, and select Work.
- Add your data. Attach a CSV or spreadsheet, or connect Google Drive and paste the exact Google Drive or Google Sheets address into the chat.
- Prompt for a Site. Include the word "website" in your prompt or mention @Sites, asking for charts, filters, source freshness, and the supporting calculations.
- Deploy and set access. Deploying gives the Site a live web address that updates on every deploy and starts visible only to you and workspace admins. You can share it with specific people or groups (who sign in with the invited account), your workspace, or anyone on the internet without a ChatGPT login if public publishing is enabled (off by default in Enterprise).
- Schedule browser updates. Because the Site does not run a schedule itself, start a scheduled ChatGPT Work task in the browser so it keeps running when your laptop is off. The scheduled task checks the source on your schedule (for example, each weekday) and updates the dashboard.
How do you make a dashboard in Claude?
You make a dashboard in Claude by turning on Code execution and file creation in Settings, then Capabilities, uploading a CSV or XLSX file (or connecting Google Sheets via the Google Drive connector), and asking for a dashboard artifact. Artifacts and Code execution and file creation work on all plans (Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise across web, desktop, and mobile), and Anthropic lists dashboards and single-page websites among the artifacts Claude can build. The same setting also lets Claude generate Excel files with working formulas and PNG chart images, while the Google Drive connector is available to all users (once enabled by Team or Enterprise owners).
For data in a warehouse such as BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, Databricks, or ClickHouse, or a connected app like Salesforce, Claude Dashboards is a separate beta on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise that writes a query for each chart and shows when it last refreshed. Anthropic describes it as made for quick, exploratory questions rather than uploaded spreadsheets.
Artifacts start private, and link sharing requires Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise (staying inside the organization by default on Team and Enterprise). Everyone needs a Claude account to open a shared artifact, even with Anyone with the link, and artifacts connected to your apps cannot use Anyone with the link and use the viewer's connections instead of yours. If your client does not use Claude, plan a different way to share before you build.
Whether you use ChatGPT, Claude, or another assistant, this prompt works in any of these tools:
Ask your AI
Turn this spreadsheet into an interactive dashboard for my team. Put the three to five most important numbers at the top, add a chart for the trend over time and one for the breakdown by category, add a filter for the date range, and list the calculation behind each number so I can check it.
Can Gemini or Copilot make a dashboard?
Yes, both Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot can build charts and dashboards from spreadsheets. In the Gemini web app, you can upload a spreadsheet to create a chart and edit its type and labels, or use Gemini Canvas (available without a paid Google AI plan) to build a shareable app. A Canvas app link opens only on gemini.google.com (not the mobile app), and anyone with the public link can view and edit data associated with the app.
In Google Sheets, the Ask Gemini side panel builds charts and pivot tables on eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plans (save Excel files as Google Sheets first), though those charts do not update when source data changes.
In Microsoft Excel on Windows, Mac and the web, Copilot opens in edit mode by default and can build dashboards, charts and PivotTables linked to your workbook data. It needs Microsoft 365 Personal or Family with an AI credits plan, Microsoft 365 Premium, a commercial Copilot subscription, or a Copilot Chat-eligible business plan. When you save Copilot's changes, anyone with access to the file can see them.
Is there a free way to make a dashboard with AI?
Yes, several tools let you build or publish a dashboard at no cost:
- ChatGPT Free: Up to 3 file uploads a day and interactive bar, line, pie and scatter charts in the chat, but no Sites hosting.
- Claude Free: Builds interactive dashboard artifacts and downloadable Excel files with working formulas for your own use, without artifact link sharing.
- Gemini Canvas: Builds apps without a paid Google AI plan and shares them via public links on gemini.google.com, where anyone with the link can view and edit associated data.
- Data Studio: Google's no-cost tool (renamed from Looker Studio in April 2026) connects to Google Sheets to build shareable dashboards and reports.
- Google Sheets, Publish to web: File, then Share, then Publish to web gives a sheet or chart a web address that updates within a few minutes and shows values (not formulas) to the web, your organization, or a group, unless disabled by an admin.
How do you check the numbers before you share?
Always verify the dashboard's numbers against your spreadsheet before sharing. OpenAI advises using ChatGPT as a first draft and reviewing its generated code, outputs, and assumptions; Anthropic says not to treat Claude as a single source of truth; Google notes Gemini in Sheets may suggest inaccurate information; and Microsoft says to verify Copilot's output and avoid using it for sensitive finance, legal, or medical decisions. Following OpenAI's advice for ChatGPT Sites, compare totals and calculations with the source data before and after filtering. Add up one filtered month yourself in the spreadsheet and compare.
How do you share a dashboard with people who don't use your AI?
Sharing rules depend on where you built the dashboard, because several tools require viewers to log in to the same AI platform. For broader options beyond dashboards, see our guide on how to share a ChatGPT or Claude project with your team.
| Where you build it | Who can open a shared copy | Stays up to date | Plan needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT chat charts | Not covered here; share the chat or rebuild as a Site | No, upload a new file in the chat | Free or paid (Free allows 3 file uploads a day) |
| ChatGPT Sites | Invited accounts, workspace, or anyone if public | Yes, via a scheduled ChatGPT Work browser task | Plus, Pro, Business, or Enterprise (public beta) |
| Claude artifact | Anyone with a Claude account (org only by default on Team/Enterprise) | Not documented for uploaded files | Free to build; Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise to share |
| Gemini Canvas app | Anyone with the public link on gemini.google.com (can view and edit data) | Not documented | Available without a paid Google AI plan |
| Copilot in Excel | Anyone with access to the saved Excel file | Linked to the workbook's data | Eligible Microsoft 365 + AI credits, Premium, or Copilot plan |
| Google Sheets, Publish to web | Web, your organization, or a group (per account settings) | Yes, updates automatically within a few minutes | Google account (work or school admins may disable publishing) |
| SecondPage | Invited emails, your organization, or anyone with the link (no AI account needed) | Yes, can refresh from Google Sheets or an uploaded CSV | Starter is free (30-day page availability); Pro and Custom are paid |
If everyone who needs the dashboard is in the same ChatGPT workspace, a ChatGPT Site is the simpler choice. When you need to share a lightweight dashboard outside your workspace, you can publish it to SecondPage by uploading files or asking a connected AI such as Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini. (Disclosure: SecondPage is our product, and you are reading a SecondPage page.) A page set to Anyone with the link opens with no ChatGPT, Claude, or SecondPage account, or you can keep it Restricted to people you add by email or to Your organization. Depending on your plan, the page can connect to Google Sheets or an uploaded CSV so it refreshes from the source, and reviewers can leave comments or anchored edits right on the page for your AI or Turner (SecondPage's built-in assistant) to apply at the same link.
Questions people ask
Can ChatGPT make a dashboard from Excel?
Yes, ChatGPT accepts XLSX, XLS, CSV, and TSV files up to about 50 MB each. On any plan, it can run Python to build interactive tables and bar, line, pie, or scatter charts in the chat. On Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans, you can use ChatGPT Work and @Sites to host an interactive dashboard at its own web address.
Does a ChatGPT dashboard update automatically?
Charts in a regular ChatGPT chat do not update when your spreadsheet changes. For a dashboard built with ChatGPT Work and Sites, you can set up a scheduled ChatGPT Work task in the browser (for example, each weekday) that checks the source and updates the dashboard, even when your laptop is off.
Can people without Claude open a Claude dashboard?
No, everyone needs a Claude account to open a shared Claude artifact, even when it is set to Anyone with the link, and link sharing requires a Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise plan. To reach people without Claude, ask Claude to create an Excel file with working formulas or publish the dashboard to a host that does not require a Claude login.
What is the best free way to make a dashboard with AI?
You can build a dashboard for your own use on Claude Free, upload up to 3 files a day for chat charts on ChatGPT Free, or share a public app on gemini.google.com with Gemini Canvas (where viewers with the link can also edit the app's data). For free automatic updates from a Google Sheet, use Google Sheets (File, then Share, then Publish to web) or Google's no-cost Data Studio (renamed from Looker Studio in April 2026).
Is it safe to upload company data to make a dashboard?
Remove columns you do not want repeated before uploading, and never put Protected Health Information or payment-card data into ChatGPT Sites. By default, OpenAI does not train on ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, or Edu content, and Anthropic does not train on Claude Team or Enterprise data or Google Drive connector data. On ChatGPT Free, Plus, and Pro, turn off Improve the model for everyone in Settings, then Data controls, and on Claude Free, Pro, and Max, Anthropic uses chats for training only if you allow it.
Share your dashboard without account walls
